Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Texas
The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Texas, also known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a nonprofit organization responsible for governing Freemasonry within the state of Texas. Founded on April 16, 1838, during the Republic of Texas era, it is one of the largest and most influential Masonic bodies in the United States.
Early History
The origins of Freemasonry in Texas date back to the early 19th century. Stephen F. Austin, a key figure in the colonization of Texas, attempted to establish a Masonic lodge in 1828 by petitioning the York Grand Lodge of Mexico. However, this effort was thwarted due to the Mexican government's ban on Freemasonry in October 1828, fearing the liberal influences of American Freemasons might destabilize the region[1][2].
In March 1835, a group of five Master Masons, including Anson Jones, met secretly under a Masonic Oak near Brazoria, Texas. They petitioned the Grand Lodge of Louisiana for a dispensation to form a lodge in Texas. This led to the creation of Holland Lodge No. 36, which later became Holland Lodge No. 1. The lodge was named after John H. Holland, the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana at the time[1][2][4].
Formation of the Grand Lodge of Texas
Following the establishment of Holland Lodge, two additional lodges were chartered by the Grand Lodge of Louisiana: Milam Lodge No. 40 in Nacogdoches and McFarland Lodge No. 41 in San Augustine, both in 1837. Delegates from these three lodges convened in Houston in December 1837 and, with Sam Houston presiding, established the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas. Anson Jones was elected as the first Grand Master[3][4].
After Texas became a state in 1845, the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas evolved into the Grand Lodge of Texas. The initial headquarters were in Houston before relocating to Waco in 1903[4].
Contributions and Impact
Freemasonry in Texas has played a significant role in the state's governance, with many prominent figures, including all presidents of the Republic of Texas and several governors of the state, being Masons[3]. Masons have also contributed to various community services, including educational programs and support for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children[4].
The Grand Lodge of Texas continues to be a strong force in local communities, supporting charitable initiatives and promoting the values of Freemasonry throughout the state[4].
