Q&A from Eating Disorders Review Journal: Q. I saw a presentation on zinc deficiency at a recent meeting. Is this deficiency worse among patients with severe eating disorders? (P.A., Phoenix, AZ) A. Zinc deficiency appears to be common in certain severe eating disorders. “Hypozincemia” is a term recently coined by family physician Kara Leach, MD and her colleagues at the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders and Severe Malnutrition at Denver Health Medical Center (J Eat Disord. 2025. 13:17). In their observational, single-center study, the team found that the high relapse rate in their patients paralleled the high relapse rates often reported in those with severe eating disorders, particularly patients with restrictive and binge-purge anorexia nervosa (AN-R and AN-BP) and avoidant restrictive feeding disorder (ARFID). (Normal plasma and serum zinc levels are 0.66-1.10 mcg/mL for children older than 10 and adults.) https://loom.ly/Bnb3Qbo (fb)
