Got a wild hare? Jackrabbits are hares which means they are born fully furred and with eyes open. These hares were found with a dead mother at 2 days old. The smaller Brush rabbit pictured beside the jackrabbit is 2 weeks old and they top out at 2 lbs. These bunnies only look similar when they are small and as they age, the differences increase. Jackrabbits have long ears to keep them cool and long legs for speed. Brush rabbits have small ears and are small because they spend a great deal of their time hiding from predators in the brush. Both rabbits and hares are important to the ecosystem because they enrich the soil with their waste which is great fertilizer for the soil, they are a food source for many other animals, they keep invasive vegetation under control and they help with plant diversity as they spread seeds. We believe these hares and rabbits will survive to thrive and return to the wild. It is HOT, HOT, HOT and Barn Owls are coming to us in great numbers. Water on the ground and bird baths are great for birds of all types on hot days. These birds are dehydrated and dying when they come to us and with hydration and treatment for injuries they will likely survive. The sooner they come in the better their chances are for survival, These amazing predatory birds can eat 1800 to 2000 rodents in a breeding season. If you install a Barn owl box, be sure it will have shade and clean it every season. We are happy to help, so do not hesitate to call 209-283-3245.
