Oregon College of Oriental Medicine

Overview

The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM) was a nonprofit educational institution located in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to the field of acupuncture and Oriental medicine. Founded in 1983 by Satya Ambrose and Eric Stephens, the college specialized in offering professional graduate degree programs.

History

OCOM was established as a single-purpose professional graduate school focused on providing high-quality training in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. Its first class of master's students graduated in 1986. The college achieved accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) in 1989, becoming one of the earliest institutions to achieve such status in the field.

Programs

OCOM offered several specialized degree programs:

• Master of Acupuncture (MAc)
• Master of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (MACM)
• Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (DACM)
• Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM)

These programs were designed to prepare students for careers in alternative medicine, emphasizing the integration of traditional Eastern practices into modern healthcare.

Closure

Unfortunately, OCOM faced significant challenges, including rising operational costs, declining enrollment, and the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, issues related to its curriculum and student outcomes contributed to its closure. OCOM officially ceased operations on August 29, 2024. Despite its closure, the legacy of OCOM continues through the widespread community of alumni, instructors, and patients whose lives were touched by its teachings.

Community Impact

OCOM operated a public clinic that provided patient treatment services and participated in community redevelopment efforts in Portland's Old Town/Chinatown district. The school contributed to economic activity in the area through its facilities and services. However, graduates often faced difficulties, including high debt and low earnings, which have prompted appeals for financial relief.
