Epsilon Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity Charity Bowl Inc
Overview
Epsilon Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity Charity Bowl Inc. is a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation based in Oxford, Mississippi. The organization is primarily known for its annual philanthropy event, the Sigma Nu Charity Bowl.
History
The Sigma Nu Charity Bowl was established in 1990 to honor Chucky Mullins, an Ole Miss football player who suffered a paralyzing injury during a game in 1989. Although Mullins passed away in 1991, his courage and resilience have remained an inspiration to the Ole Miss community. Each year, the charity selects an individual living with paralysis as its primary recipient.
Activities
The Sigma Nu Charity Bowl is a multi-faceted event that includes a full-contact football game, a sorority cheer competition, and a homecoming style court. It is held annually at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and has grown to be one of the largest collegiate philanthropies in the country. The event relies on financial donations and program advertisement sales to raise funds.
Impact
Since its inception, Charity Bowl has raised over $3 million for individuals with paralysis. In recent years, the charity has also supported other organizations, including the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Manning Foundation. As of 2023, the organization provided $375,000 in grants.
Recipients and Beneficiaries
Each year, the Charity Bowl selects a person living with paralysis as its recipient. For example, in 2025, Hannah Johnston from Carthage, Mississippi, has been chosen due to her inspiring story of resilience following a spinal cord injury. Additionally, the organization supports other charitable causes, such as the William Magee Center for Wellness Education.

About Charity Bowl During the Ole Miss Rebels 1989 Homecoming game against the Vanderbilt Commodores Ole Miss defensive back Chucky Mullins plunged headfirst into a tackle of Vanderbilt fullback Brad Gaines after a short pass attempt. The impact shattered four vertebrae in Mullins cervical spine immediately paralyzing him. In the face of this challenge Mullins inspired the nation with his resilience and positivity. In efforts to support Mullins recovery active members of Sigma Nu at Ole Miss founded Charity Bowl in 1990.
