Go behind the scenes with our horticulture manager Kelly to see how we harvest cochineal in our Experimental Ranch Garden. 🐞 This ancient practice was first developed by Indigenous Americans thousands of years ago, and the natural red dye has been utilized by many cultures to color food, cosmetics, textiles, and more. The process begins with collecting carminic acid from cochineal insects that live on prickly pear or nopales cacti.
