Responsibility House
Responsibility House is a private non-profit 501(c)3 organization based in the New Orleans area, dedicated to addressing the needs of underserved, indigent, and disabled populations. Established in 1994, the organization initially focused on supporting individuals with substance use disorders but later expanded its mission in 2000 to include providing housing for the homeless.
Mission and Vision
Responsibility House aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals, families, and the community by promoting health and wellbeing, encouraging healthy and productive lifestyles, providing safe housing to homeless individuals, and guiding those in recovery. The organization envisions a harmonious and supportive community where all members can expect a peaceful, respectful, and abuse-free society.
Core Values
The core values of Responsibility House include honesty, accountability, integrity, respect, continuous growth, service, and compassion. They believe each individual is inherently sacred and demonstrate this by treating everyone with respect and dignity.
Programs and Services
Responsibility House offers a range of programs to support recovery and stability:
- Residential Treatment Program: Provides alcohol and drug education, allowing participants, specifically men, to develop a sober support system over a three-month period.
- Outpatient Programs: Offers two levels of outpatient substance abuse treatment.
- Supportive Housing Programs: Based on the Housing First model, these programs provide permanent housing to homeless individuals, helping them regain self-confidence and control over their lives.
Responsibility House also extends its support to families and individuals dealing with substance abuse, chronic homelessness, mental illness, or HIV/AIDS, employing a people-driven approach in its program design and implementation.
History and Founding
The organization was founded by Mike Martyn in 1994, inspired by his personal experiences with addiction and subsequent recovery. Recognizing the critical role of support in his transformation, Martyn sought to assist others battling similar challenges. Over the years, Responsibility House has grown to become a vital resource in the Greater New Orleans area, providing essential services that address complex needs related to substance use disorders and related challenges.
