La Leche League International Inc (LLLI) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting breastfeeding globally through mother-to-mother support and education. History

La Leche League International was initially founded in 1956 in Franklin Park, Illinois, by Marian Thompson, Mary White, Mary Ann Cahill, Edwina Froehlich, Mary Ann Kerwin, Viola Lennon, and Betty Wagner. At the time of its founding, only about 20% of babies in the United States were being breastfed. The first formal La Leche League meeting was held on October 17, 1956. In 1960, the first group outside the United States was established in Jonquiere, Quebec, Canada. By 1964, La Leche League became La Leche League International, Inc. (LLLI), marking its expansion into Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand. This period was also marked by the organization's first international conference in Chicago.

Mission and Activities

LLLI's mission is centered on providing mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education to promote breastfeeding worldwide. The organization operates in about 89 countries, offering support through meetings moderated by accredited Leaders. These meetings are now held in various venues, including hospitals and community centers.

In addition to its core activities, LLLI has been involved in broader initiatives. For example, in 1985, it contributed to the establishment of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), which administers a certification program for lactation consultants. In November 2024, a controversy arose when one of the founders resigned over the inclusion of transgender individuals within the organization. This highlighted ongoing discussions about inclusivity and diversity within LLLI's mission.
