#ThrowbackThursday to October 10, 1979 — the day it all began! On this date, a dedicated group of park lovers gathered County of San Diego Parks and Recreation for the first formal meeting of what would become the San Diego County Parks Society. They adopted bylaws, elected the first Board of Directors, and laid the foundation for a nonprofit that would go on to support generations of park programs, community events, and conservation efforts. Dr. Louis Robinson was elected our very first President, joined by passionate leaders from across the County. Together, they launched the Society with a vision to preserve, protect, and enhance San Diego County parks — a vision we’re proud to carry forward today. 🎉 Charter memberships were even offered to early supporters through January 1980! From that first meeting to today, the Parks Society has remained committed to supporting the places that make San Diego special.
