Road Runners Club of America
The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the oldest and largest distance running organization in the United States. Founded in 1958, the RRCA is dedicated to promoting and supporting running clubs and events across the country.
Mission and Structure
The RRCA's mission is to champion the development of community-based running clubs and events that serve runners of all ages and abilities. It aims to foster a nationwide network of active and organized running clubs and events. The RRCA consists of over 2,700 member clubs and events, representing more than 250,000 individual runners.
The organization is governed by a Board of Directors elected by its member clubs. The voting power is proportional to each club's size. The board includes Regional Directors who oversee efforts in different regions of the United States.
Programs and Services
The RRCA offers a variety of programs and services to support its members and the broader running community:
- Coaching Certification: The RRCA certifies coaches specializing in training long-distance runners.
- Event Organization: Many races across the U.S. are organized by RRCA member clubs, ensuring well-managed events for participants.
- Liability Insurance: The RRCA provides liability insurance coverage for its member clubs and events.
- Runner Safety and Education: Programs focus on safety awareness and educational resources for runners.
- National Championships: The RRCA oversees a series of national, regional, and state championship events.
- Road Scholars Program: This program offers financial support to emerging elite athletes.
- Kids Run the Nation Program: A 10-week youth running program curriculum with small grants for youth running initiatives.
Advocacy and Achievements
The RRCA has been instrumental in promoting women's running, lobbying for equal opportunities such as the inclusion of a women's Olympic marathon and advocating for equal prize structures for men and women. It has also supported the development of race courses and pioneered accurate course measurement.
Awards and Recognition
The RRCA hosts annual National Running Awards to recognize outstanding contributions to the running community, including the RRCA Hall of Fame for individuals who have made significant contributions to long-distance running.
Membership and Community
Membership in the RRCA is open to running clubs and individuals. The organization encourages individuals to join local member clubs where available, extending full RRCA benefits to all members of these clubs.
