Utah Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee
Overview

The Utah Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, now known as the Utah Electrical Training Alliance, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive training in the electrical industry. It was established through a collaboration between the Intermountain Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association and Local Union 354 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. The committee operates with the goal of providing a highly skilled workforce for the state's electrical construction industry.

History

The organization has its roots dating back to the 1960s when IBEW Local Union 354 and the Intermountain Chapter of NECA formed a trust document to create the first Utah Electrical JATC. In 1983, following the merger of IBEW Local Unions 354 and 217, the Utah Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee expanded to cover the entire state of Utah. The name was adapted over time to reflect its current form as the Utah Electrical Training Alliance.

Programs Offered

The organization offers two primary apprenticeship programs:

  • Inside Wireman: This program focuses on the installation, modification, and repair of electrical wiring and equipment in buildings and industrial plants. It involves extensive on-the-job training and classroom instruction over five years, totaling 8,000 hours of on-site experience.
  • Telecommunications Installer/Technician: This program is focused on installing low-voltage cabling systems for communication and other data transmission networks.

Both programs are designed to equip apprentices with theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for the demands of the electrical industry.

Training Methodology

The apprenticeship model emphasizes learning by doing, with apprentices working under the guidance of experienced journeymen. Alongside on-the-job training, apprentices receive classroom instruction to complement their practical skills, fostering a comprehensive understanding of electrical systems and safety protocols.

Apprentices start earning a livable wage from the beginning of their training and receive incremental pay increases based on their performance and accumulated hours of training.

Recognition and Accreditation

The apprenticeship programs offered by the Utah Electrical Training Alliance are registered with the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training. Graduates are recognized nationally as highly skilled craftsmen, allowing them to pursue career advancement opportunities across the United States.

Impact on the Electrical Industry

The organization plays a critical role in addressing the growing demand for skilled electricians in Utah. It provides a platform for aspiring electricians to gain hands-on experience, reinforcing the state's workforce with highly competent electrical professionals. The emphasis on safety standards, industry best practices, and technological advancements ensures that graduates are equipped to meet the evolving needs of the electrical sector.
