Green Acres Urban Farm and Research Project

Overview

Green Acres Urban Farm and Research Project is a nonprofit organization located in Kansas City, Missouri. Founded in 2009 by Carol Coe, its mission is to address urban agriculture challenges through innovative farming methods, education, and community engagement.

Mission and Objectives

The organization focuses on developing sustainable urban food systems using cutting-edge techniques such as aquaponics and hydroponics. This approach aims to provide fresh, nutrient-dense produce to communities lacking access to healthy food options, often referred to as "food deserts." Green Acres also emphasizes educational opportunities, including STEM learning experiences, to empower local students and emerging farmers.

Initiatives and Partnerships

Green Acres partners with the City of Kansas City, the Kansas City, Missouri School District, and other organizations to achieve its objectives. A key initiative is the aquaponics program hosted at East High School's greenhouses, which serves as both a production site for fresh produce and a learning platform for students. The organization also works on developing urban organic markets and micro-cooperatives, aiming to create efficient systems for produce distribution.

Educational Programs

Green Acres offers educational programs and donor-funded training in urban agriculture. These programs cater to both students and emerging farmers, providing hands-on experience with organic cultivation and sustainable agriculture practices.

Community Engagement

The organization encourages community participation through volunteer opportunities. Volunteers assist in planning, growing, and promoting healthy, organic food production. Activities are designed to engage participants throughout the year, including winter months, thanks to climate-smart agriculture systems.

Leadership and Organization

William (Bill) Coe serves as the Director and CEO of Green Acres Urban Farm and Research Project. The organization's leadership is committed to maintaining a professional and educational environment that supports its mission of fostering sustainable urban ecology and resourceful community development.
