Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA, commonly known as the Elks Lodge or simply The Elks, is an American fraternal order and charitable organization. Founded in 1868 in New York City, the Elks have grown into a nationwide brotherhood dedicated to community service, patriotism, and mutual aid.
History
The Elks were originally established as a social club for minstrel show performers by actor Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian. Following the death of a fellow actor due to lack of funds, the group evolved into a fraternal order focused on supporting fellow members in need. By December 1868, the organization had adopted its current name, choosing the elk as its symbol due to its stately qualities and protective nature. By 1890, the Elks had expanded to 173 lodges across the United States.
Historically, the Elks were an exclusive organization, barring women and minorities until the late 20th century. However, significant changes were made to address these exclusions. In 1972, the organization began admitting African Americans and other minorities, and in 1995, women were officially welcomed as members.
Mission and Activities
The Elks operate under four core principles: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. They are known for their extensive philanthropic programs, including support for veterans, youth scholarships (notably the "Hoop Shoot" contest), and disaster relief efforts. The organization also conducts community events such as Flag Day observances and advocates for civil defense programs.
Membership
To become an Elk, candidates must be U.S. citizens over 21, believers in God, and of good character. They must also pledge allegiance to the U.S. flag and abstain from supporting any organization advocating violence against the government.
Structure and Traditions
Each Elks Lodge is governed by an Exalted Ruler, similar to the "Worshipful Master" in Masonic lodges. The organization maintains several fraternal traditions, including the nightly Hour of Recollection toast to absent members and the use of formal regalia during initiation ceremonies. Every meeting room contains an altar with the Holy Bible, symbolizing the organization's values.
Auxiliary Organizations
While not directly affiliated, the Elks have auxiliary groups like the Emblem Club, which often cooperate with local Elks Lodges on community projects.
Similar Organizations
The Elks have counterparts such as the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW), an African-American fraternal order founded in 1897 by individuals denied membership in the BPOE. The IBPOEW maintains a strong presence with its own rituals and symbols.
Current Status
Today, the BPOE has over 750,000 members across more than 1,928 local lodges, making it one of the largest and most respected fraternal organizations in the United States.
