American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is a nonprofit professional organization that focuses on advancing technologies related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R). Founded in 1894, ASHRAE has evolved from its origins at a meeting of engineers in New York City. Initially known as the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers (ASHVE), it changed its name to the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) in 1954. The current name and structure were established in 1959 following a merger with the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE).

Mission and Activities

ASHRAE's mission is to advance the fields of HVAC&R through research, standards development, and education. The organization promotes the design and installation of HVAC systems, enhances energy efficiency, improves indoor air quality, and supports sustainable development in buildings. ASHRAE has over 50,000 members across the globe, making it a highly influential international body despite its American origins.

Publications and Standards

ASHRAE publishes numerous technical standards and guidelines that are widely referenced in building codes and by industry professionals. These include standards such as 34, 55, 62.1, 90.1, and 189.1, which address topics from refrigerant safety to energy efficiency in buildings. The society also releases the ASHRAE Handbook, which is updated annually, as well as magazines like the ASHRAE Journal and High Performing Buildings Magazine.

Membership and Community

Membership in ASHRAE provides access to a global community of professionals in the HVAC&R field, offering opportunities for networking, education, and participation in local chapters. Members can engage in research, professional development, and fundraising for scholarships through the ASHRAE Foundation.

Chapters and Regional Activities

ASHRAE has numerous local chapters around the world, each involved in promoting industry standards and best practices at the regional level. Chapters often host events like conferences and educational sessions, contributing to the advancement of the HVAC&R industry locally and globally.

Certification and Professional Development

ASHRAE offers certification programs recognized by many governmental and professional bodies, ensuring that professionals in the field meet high standards of competence. The organization also supports ongoing professional development through workshops, courses, and the ASHRAE Learning Institute.
