Childhaven

Overview

Childhaven is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving children and families affected by adversity and trauma, primarily in King County, Washington. The organization has a long history dating back to 1909 when it was founded as Seattle Day Nursery by Reverend Mark A. Matthews. Over the years, it has evolved to focus on providing trauma-informed care and relational health services to those in need.

History

Established as the Seattle Day Nursery, Childhaven was one of only 50 childcare centers in the United States at the time of its inception. By 1965, it became the first organization to introduce the Head Start program to the west coast, offering a year-round preschool program. Under the leadership of Patrick Gogerty, who became executive director in 1973, the organization shifted its focus to addressing child abuse. In 1977, it established the Therapeutic Child Care Program and was later renamed Childhaven in 1985.

Programs and Services

Childhaven operates several programs aimed at supporting children and their families. The services include:

• Early Learning: Providing early childhood education to prepare children for school.
• Counseling Services: Offering therapy to address trauma and promote mental health.
• Developmental Therapies: Tailored therapies to support children's developmental needs.
• Wraparound Support: Comprehensive support services that involve family and community.

These programs are guided by a healing-centered framework that emphasizes relational health, trauma-informed care, racial equity, and social justice. Childhaven operates across three main branches in King County: the Broadway Branch in First Hill, the Eli Creekmore Memorial Branch in Burien, and the Patrick L. Gogerty Branch in Auburn.

Impact and Recognition

Childhaven has gained national recognition for its innovative approach to addressing childhood trauma and adversity. Its model has been replicated by other organizations in both the U.S. and internationally. The organization has also received a 4-star rating on Charity Navigator, reflecting a high standard of financial management and transparency.

Mission

Childhaven's mission is to partner with parents and the community to strengthen families and prevent the damaging effects of childhood trauma. It seeks to foster strong relationships and build resilience in children through its trauma-informed care framework. By embedding relational health and social justice into all its services, Childhaven aims to create a supportive environment where children can thrive despite adversity.
