Growth and Development Services, Inc. (GDS)
Growth and Development Services, Inc. (GDS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth and fostering community development. Founded in 1996 by Dr. Gary Altheim, a Clinical Psychologist, GDS focuses on mental health support, youth development, and intergenerational programs for underserved youth in New York City.
Mission
The mission of GDS is to empower youth to make unprecedented life transformations by providing them with the inspiration and means to discover and sustain purpose and pride in themselves, their families, and their community. GDS aims to address social injustice, family instability, and mental health challenges faced by these youth.
Programs
GDS offers several transformative programs designed to equip youth with the skills, support, confidence, and motivation needed to succeed in school, their communities, and the workforce.
The Excel Program
The Excel Program is GDS's flagship initiative, emphasizing leadership development, mental health awareness, mentoring, wellness courses, educational support, career preparation, advocacy through the arts, and training in civic engagement and public speaking. It fosters confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility, preparing youth to become future leaders.
Leaders for Change
Leaders for Change is a summer extension of the Excel Program, empowering youth to advocate for meaningful change in their communities. This initiative provides participants with leadership skills, mental health awareness, and tools for advocacy, along with civic engagement activities and public speaking training.
Youth Engaging Seniors (YES)
YES is a therapeutic intergenerational program that uses music to bridge the gap between generations. It connects young people with older adults in their community, promoting mutual understanding, reducing isolation, and inspiring a vibrant sense of community.
Impact
GDS's programs have proven successful in providing teens with improved self-esteem, leadership skills, and mental health awareness. Over 28 years, GDS has empowered more than a thousand underserved young people, helping them thrive in challenging environments.
Recognition
Dr. Gary Altheim, the founder of GDS, was recognized as a "Change Maker" by the Child Mind Institute in 2018 for his dedication to transforming the lives of vulnerable teens in Upper Manhattan.
