Toastmasters International, Inc.
The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
Toastmasters International, Inc.
Toastmasters International, Inc. is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to helping individuals improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. Founded by Ralph C. Smedley, its roots trace back to a series of informal speaking clubs Smedley organized while working at the YMCA in Illinois in 1905. However, the first official Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California.
History
Early Years
Ralph C. Smedley, a 1903 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, began developing the concept of Toastmasters while working as the education director at the Bloomington YMCA in Illinois. His initial clubs were aimed at training young men in public speaking and leadership skills. Smedley’s efforts eventually led him to Santa Ana, California, where he founded the first official club, which became the foundation for Toastmasters International.
Growth and Expansion
In the years following the establishment of the first club, Toastmasters expanded across Southern California, and by 1926, Smedley had chartered the second club in Anaheim. The organization was formally incorporated as a nonprofit in 1932. In 1935, the first international club was chartered in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, marking the beginning of Toastmasters’ global expansion. By 1949, there were over 700 clubs worldwide.
Admission of Women
Historically, Toastmasters was a male-dominated organization. However, in 1973, the organization officially began admitting women as full members. This milestone was preceded by unofficial participation by some women, notably Helen Blanchard, who became the organization's first female international president in 1985.
Structure and Programs
Club Structure
Toastmasters clubs are typically composed of 20 to 30 members who meet weekly or biweekly to develop communication and leadership skills. Meetings include various roles, such as prepared speeches, impromptu Table Topics, word of the day explanations, and evaluations. Each role is designed to help members improve their public speaking abilities and confidence.
Education Programs
The organization offers several educational programs aimed at enhancing members' skills:
- Competent Communication Manual: Focuses on basic speaking skills, requiring members to complete ten speeches.
- Advanced Communication Manuals: Provides further specialization in various speaking techniques.
- Pathways: A modern education system offering personalized learning paths in public speaking, interpersonal communication, leadership, and more. Each path consists of 14 projects and is supported by online and print materials.
Impact and Recognition
Today, Toastmasters International spans across 150 countries, serving over 270,000 members through more than 14,000 clubs. The organization has become a leading global resource for those seeking to develop public speaking and leadership skills in a supportive environment. Through its programs and club structure, Toastmasters fosters a community that values growth, collaboration, and mentorship.
Legacy
Toastmasters has a legacy of empowering individuals to become confident public speakers and leaders. Its model of shared activities and community-led clubs ensures that members not only improve their skills but also contribute to the growth of others. This collaborative approach has enabled Toastmasters to maintain its relevance and impact over nearly a century.
