Kyra's Rescue
Kyra's Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in the Washington, D.C. metro area. It is dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs primarily from Turkey and finding them loving homes in the United States.
Mission
The organization focuses on saving dogs that have little chance of being adopted in Turkey. Despite Turkish shelters being no-kill, dogs not adopted often face harsh conditions. They may be released into rural areas where they must fend for themselves against the elements and potential cruelty, or they remain in overcrowded shelters with minimal care and resources. Kyra's Rescue seeks to relocate these dogs to families in the U.S. who are willing to provide them with a loving home.
Operations
Kyra's Rescue is run by a small group of dedicated volunteers, including professionals who devote their time to finding homes for these dogs. The organization works with contacts in Turkey to identify dogs in need and transport them to the United States. Potential adopters are required to complete an application and pay an adoption fee, which helps cover transportation, veterinary care, and other expenses involved in the rescue process.
Leadership and Structure
The organization is led by a team of four women and supported by a handful of volunteers. They operate on a volunteer basis, making decisions with the dogs' best interests in mind to ensure they are placed in safe and loving environments.
Notable Recognition
One of the dogs rescued by Kyra's Rescue, named Penny, gained national attention by winning People Magazine's World's Cutest Rescue Dog Contest in 2018. Through Penny's story, Kyra's Rescue has highlighted the rewards of adopting rescue dogs and the importance of patience and commitment in the adoption process.
Impact
Kyra's Rescue is part of a broader effort by various organizations to address the issue of homeless dogs in Turkey by finding them homes in the U.S. Their work encourages people to consider adopting from rescue groups or shelters, emphasizing the positive impact such adoptions can have on both families and the rescued animals.
