After an honorable discharge in 2013 Justen struggled with PTSD and transitioning to civilian life. In September 2016 he died by suicide leaving behind a loving family and then six year old daughter. The Justen Caris Memorial Foundation is a 501c3 established in 2022 with the goal to support veterans in crisis by raising awareness of PTSD providing financial assistance and connecting veterans with local veteran centered resources.
