Pacific Northwest College of Art
PNCA PREPARES STUDENTS FOR A LIFE OF CREATIVE PRACTICE. Pacific Northwest College of Art is a private, non-profit fine arts and design college. Founded in 1909 in Portland, Oregon, PNCA offers ten Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degrees, a minor in Art and Ecology, seven graduate degrees including Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Master of Arts (MA) degrees, a Post-Baccalaureate, and a range of Community Education.
Pacific Northwest College of Art
The Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) is a nonprofit institution located in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1909 as part of the Portland Art Museum, it was originally known as the Museum Art School. Anna Belle Crocker served as its first principal, while Kate Cameron Simmons was the first hired teacher[1][2].
History
PNCA was established by the Portland Art Association and initially operated within the Portland Art Museum. Over the years, it evolved to become an independent institution. In 1981, it adopted its current name, and by 1994, it had fully separated from the Portland Art Museum[1][2]. During the post-war period, the school grew under influential faculty members who were proponents of Oregon regionalism and brought influences from Abstract Expressionism and Modernism[1].
Programs and Degrees
PNCA offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs in visual arts and design. Its undergraduate degrees include Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) programs in fields such as Communication Design, Contemporary Animated Arts, General Fine Arts, Illustration, Intermedia, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Graduate programs include Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees in Visual Studies and Applied Craft and Design, the latter developed in partnership with the Oregon College of Art and Craft[1][3].
Facilities and Community Involvement
PNCA moved into the historic Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design in the North Park Blocks in 2015, following significant renovations[1][2]. The college is actively involved in Portland's cultural scene through exhibitions at its Center for Contemporary Art & Culture and collaborations with international artists[3]. PNCA also supports continuing education and community programs for learners of all ages[3].
Recent Developments
As of late 2018, PNCA considered merging with the Oregon College of Art and Craft but ultimately decided against it[2]. In recent years, PNCA has continued to expand its global reach with international studies initiatives and partnerships, enhancing students' opportunities for artistic growth[2][3].
Accreditation and Affiliations
PNCA is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and nationally accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design[1]. It is part of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD)[3].
Educational Environment
PNCA is known for its small class sizes and personalized mentorship, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 9:1[3][5]. This supportive environment allows students to thrive in a close-knit community of artists and designers[5].
Recent Merger with Willamette University
In recent years, PNCA merged with Willamette University, providing students with new opportunities for interdisciplinary study and collaboration[5]. This merger allows for shared resources and coursework between the two institutions[4].
