Olympia Junior Programs
Olympia Junior Programs (OJP) is a non-profit organization established in 1940 with a mission to provide high-quality live theater experiences to elementary school students. OJP is part of a broader national movement that began in the 1930s to introduce children to the art of live theater.
History
Following its inception, OJP faced challenges during World War II, leading to the discontinuation of national tours by performers. However, in 1947, the organization was formally incorporated as a non-profit and has since remained an all-volunteer entity. Initially, performances were held at Olympia High School, and later at the Capitol Theater from 1952 to 1985. In 1986, OJP moved to its current venue, the Washington Center for the Performing Arts.
Activities
OJP presents a variety of theatrical productions, including drama, comedy, music, mime, dance, and song, designed to align with school curricula and focus on literature, historical events, or notable individuals. The organization typically offers separate shows for different grade levels: grades 1-3 and grades 3-6. Performances are professionally produced, providing students with enriching and educational experiences.
Volunteer Structure
OJP is fully volunteer-driven, relying on community members, parents, and local organizations for support. Each participating school assigns a School Representative who coordinates volunteer efforts, including recruiting parent ushers. Volunteer ushers play a crucial role in managing the logistical aspects of the events.
Funding and Support
The organization faces ongoing challenges such as rising production costs and weather-related cancellations, which necessitate continuous fundraising efforts. OJP has received support from local initiatives like Inspire Olympia, a public-funded program of the City of Olympia designed to aid non-profit organizations in the cultural arts.
Impact
Annually, OJP serves approximately 15,000 to 20,000 students from over 60 schools in Thurston and surrounding counties, making it a significant part of the regional educational and cultural landscape. By offering these performances at a minimal cost, OJP ensures that every student has the opportunity to engage with live theater during school hours.
