🔥🔨Independence Day at the Homestead celebrates America’s birthday with a variety of eighteenth-century military demonstrations., including our very popular blacksmithing. We are thrilled to have Zimmerman Forge joining us again this year, and since our reproduction bellows have been installed, demonstrations can once again be done inside our Blacksmith Shop. Blacksmiths were essential to the success of the American Revolution as they would make ironwork used in the field but also on the home front. Because blacksmiths needed to heat the iron to work it, the forge was the most important part of this trade. Charcoal was the fuel of the mid-eighteenth century and could have been purchased from a local iron furnace or been made by the blacksmith himself. The leather bellows increased the intensity of the fire. A variety of tongs were used to hold the iron during working. Blacksmiths also utilized hammers, fletters, suages, and fullers to shape the metal. The anvil consisted of flat areas and the “horn,” used to bend iron into curves. Yesterday, we welcomed our last group for the spring and students enjoyed a variety of hands-on activities including butter making, a tour through the Boone House, quill pen writing, and a fun scavenger hunt through the historic area. Throughout the Spring we welcomed over 600 students for our educational programs. We are now booking educational programs for the Summer and Fall 2025 Season!
