May 15 is International Kangaroo Care Awareness Day, or Skin-to-Skin Contact Awareness Day 🦘 Known as kangaroo care, skin-to-skin contact encourages parents to embrace this connection with their newborns immediately after birth and through the neonatal period. This is especially beneficial to those in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The term “kangaroo care” got its name from the type of care a kangaroo mother provides their infant, with a little pouch on the front of her body offering a cozy environment for her baby to grow.
