Tad Lincoln died in Chicago, Illinois, on this day in 1871. After her husband’s death in 1865, Mary Lincoln took up what she described as her “mission,” she would raise her “precious child Taddie” unaided, and she began by enrolling him in a school in Frankfurt, Germany. Between illness and mourning, it was difficult for either of them to enjoy the bustling excitements Frankfurt had to offer.
