Asociación de Estudios de Género y Sexualidades

Overview

The Asociación de Estudios de Género y Sexualidades (AEGS), previously known as the Asociación Internacional de Literatura y Cultura Femenina Hispánica (AILCFH), is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the dissemination, research, and critical reflection on cultural productions from the Americas and the Iberian sphere, focusing on feminist, gender, and sexuality studies.

History

Founded in 1974 by Costa Rican author and intellectual Victoria Urbano, the organization seeks to foster a critical space for discussing and analyzing gender and sexualities within Hispanic, Luso-Brazilian, and US-Latino contexts.

Mission and Activities

AEGS offers its members opportunities to present research through conferences, seminars, and workshops. The organization publishes the Revista de Estudios de Género y Sexualidades (REGS), a biannual journal featuring critical essays on gender and sexuality topics, interviews with writers and artists, book reviews, and creative works. REGS is one of the earliest academic journals dedicated exclusively to gender-related issues and feminist theory in the context of Hispanic literatures and cultures.

AEGS also awards the Victoria Urbano Awards to recognize outstanding research and creative activities in the field of gender and sexuality studies.

Organizational Structure

The organization hosts annual conferences, providing a platform for scholars to present their work. Additionally, AEGS has an executive committee overseeing its operations and maintains an active membership portal for its affiliates.

Legacy of Victoria Urbano

Victoria Urbano, the founding member, served as president of the AILCFH and editor of its journal until her passing in 1984. Her archives and related documents are housed at the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas, Austin.

Publication and Affiliations

REGS is currently published in association with the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University. The journal accepts contributions from scholars and researchers in the field of gender and sexuality studies.
