Moms Club
The Moms Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting stay-at-home mothers across the United States. The organization's name is an acronym for Moms Offering Moms Support.
History
The Moms Club was founded in 1985 by Mary James, a stay-at-home mother of two from California. James recognized the need for an organization where stay-at-home moms could connect with others in similar situations. Initially starting in California, the concept quickly expanded across the country. Today, the Moms Club operates with over 973 chapters in the United States, as well as international chapters.
Activities
The activities of the Moms Club vary by chapter, but most chapters typically offer a range of events, including:
- Monthly Meetings: These meetings serve as a primary platform for mothers to connect and discuss current topics and activities.
- Playgroups: Organized playdates for children that also allow mothers to socialize.
- Mom's Nights Out: Events designed for mothers to spend time together without their children, promoting social interaction and personal connection.
- Holiday Parties: Celebrations that involve both mothers and their families.
- Field Trips: Excursions to various destinations, offering educational and recreational experiences for both mothers and children.
- Community Speakers: Invited guests who provide insights and information on topics relevant to parenting and personal development.
- Service Projects: Initiatives aimed at giving back to the community, fostering a sense of responsibility and social awareness among members.
Nonprofit Status
The Moms Club Corporation is a 501(C)(3) public charity, registered under the educational and charitable categories with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). All chapters registered with the International Moms Club are covered under the organization's nonprofit group exemption, allowing them to operate as real nonprofit public charities.
Conflicts
In 2020, a controversy arose when the International Moms Club declined to post an anti-racist collage on their social media. The collage was created by a chapter following the murder of George Floyd and related protests. The decision was made to avoid political messages that could jeopardize the organization's nonprofit status. However, the response triggered criticism and sparked debate among members, leading to the departure of several chapters and members from the organization.
Inclusivity and Mission
Despite the controversy, the Moms Club has historically positioned itself as an inclusive organization welcoming all stay-at-home mothers, regardless of race, religion, sexuality, ethnicity, or economic status. The organization's mission focuses on fostering a sense of community among mothers, while also addressing the needs of local children and families through various activities and initiatives.
