CAE is celebrating our 50th Anniversary on May 9th, and we hope you’ll join us at the Brooklyn Academy of Music to honor the New Yorkers who made us who we are today – and usher in a new era of community care. CAE is excited to announce we will be honoring Annie Ellman, our co-founder and former Executive Director, for her long-standing commitment to a safer world for all. Discounted Early Bird Tickets are on sale now: https://bit.ly/CAE50tix Over the last five decades, the Center for Anti-Violence Education has empowered tens of thousands of New Yorkers to prevent, disrupt, and heal from violence in our communities. We were founded as Brooklyn Women’s Martial Arts in 1974 by Annie Ellman and Nadia Telsey, two radical feminist lesbian martial artists. Without a permanent location, they held self-defense workshops in living rooms, rental spaces, street fairs, and rallies. Beginning with a core of self-defense for women, CAE soon branched out to working with young people to prevent violence and address the intersections of different forms of oppression. Our founders organized support for Black women prosecuted for fighting back against attackers. To this day, our programming centers the experiences of people most targeted by sexual, gender, and hate-based violence. In 2023, we served more than 4,000 New Yorkers across all five boroughs. This year, we are collaborating with vulnerable New Yorkers – especially those from migrant, queer, and Black and Brown communities – to rise up against the tidal wave of hate violence threatening all of us. Joining us at our Spring Benefit will keep making this work possible. (fb)
