The Down Syndrome Association of Memphis and the Mid-South is an organization that promotes the inclusion of all people with Down syndrome. Our mission is to support and empower individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The Down Syndrome Association of Memphis and the Mid-South (DSAM) is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to educate and empower individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Our organization strongly promotes diversity in our community, and our community’s diversity is strengthened through the inclusion of those with Down syndrome. DSAM seeks to promote diversity by 1) providing affected family members and the community with the most up-to-date information and education about Down syndrome, and 2) fostering positive attitudes regarding people with Down syndrome by enhancing public awareness of the inherent worth, value, and contribution of these individuals to society. DSAM began in 1973 as a small group of parents who met while attending the first Early Intervention Program at the Child Development Center in Memphis. Down’s Parents of Memphis began meeting in order to learn more about Down syndrome, to improve public awareness, and to provide the most current care for their children. This group of parents began the early intervention program now known as Special Kids & Families. Re-organized as a 501(c)3 as the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis (DSAM), the organization is now serving parents, families, and friends of persons with Down syndrome throughout the Mid-South area. Under the leadership of an Executive Director and Board of Directors, DSAM is largely staffed with volunteers. DSAM provides families and our communities with: ·     Current information and education, ·     Resource Guides and Referrals for New Families, ·     Networking Opportunities, ·     Down Syndrome Specialist Teacher Training and Supports, ·     Conferences, Workshops, and Sponsorships, ·     Training and Advocacy, ·     Local and National Conference Stipends, ·     Happenings Email, Newsletters, Website, Facebook, ·     Adult Program that Promotes Independence and Job Support, ·     Reading is Key Tutoring Program.
