Description

The Impossible Dream Inc.

The Impossible Dream Inc. is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting barrier-free design and improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. It operates the world's only purpose-built, universally accessible catamaran, "The Impossible Dream," which serves as a platform for inspiring people with disabilities and fostering a sense of independence and community.

History and Mission

The catamaran, "The Impossible Dream," was originally designed and built for Mike Browne, a paraplegic sailor, with the goal of creating a vessel that could be fully operated by a person in a wheelchair. It was designed by Nick Baily and constructed by Multi-Marine in 2002. Over the years, "The Impossible Dream" has been used to break barriers in sailing, including Geoff Holtz's record-setting solo Atlantic crossing as the first quadriplegic to do so in 2010.

Under the leadership of Deborah Mellen, who acquired the vessel and co-founded the non-profit organization with Harry Horgan of Shake-A-Leg Miami, "The Impossible Dream" now travels globally, providing access to the water for thousands of people with disabilities. This new chapter highlights the organization's commitment to expanding opportunities for marginalized communities through sailing.

Core Programs

The organization offers several programs aimed at connecting with and empowering marginalized groups:

  • The Impossible Dream Media Lab: This inclusive workshop provides a supportive environment for content creators with disabilities to develop and showcase their work. Participants engage in seminars on production and storytelling, followed by a sailing experience that inspires film production.

  • Partnerships: The organization partners with leading rehabilitation hospitals and advocacy groups to inspire individuals with disabilities and raise awareness about accessible design. These partnerships include collaborations with institutions like Helen Hayes Hospital and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopedic Institute.

Features of "The Impossible Dream"

The catamaran is designed to be completely accessible to wheelchair users, featuring:

  • Universal Accessibility: The entire catamaran is built to ensure that all aspects of sailing can be managed by a person in a wheelchair, including sail handling, docking, anchoring, and maintenance.
  • Carbon Fiber Construction: It is a fast cruising yacht with a carbon fiber hull, providing a lightweight and efficient sailing experience.
  • Internal Lifts: Each hull includes an internal lift, ensuring wheelchair access to cabins and heads.
  • Flat Deck Design: The bridge deck area and outside "racetrack" are on a single level, eliminating steps or door thresholds for easy mobility.

Leadership and Governance

The organization is led by a diverse team of individuals passionate about accessible design and community engagement. Deborah Mellen serves as the Founder and CEO, while Harry Horgan is a co-founder. The board includes members from various organizations, such as the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and Shake-A-Leg Miami.
