Norfolk Society for Cemetery Conservation
The Norfolk Society for Cemetery Conservation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Norfolk, Virginia. It was established in 2013 with the mission to preserve, protect, and promote the eight historic municipal cemeteries located in Norfolk.
Mission and Activities
The society's mission is achieved through conservation, education, and advocacy. It partners with the City of Norfolk’s Bureau of Cemeteries to advance this mission. Primary activities include conducting historic cemetery tours and organizing events like the "From Here to Eternity Twilight 5k" to raise funds for conservation efforts. All proceeds from these events and donations are used to support supplies, operations, and volunteer activities.
Scope of Work
The eight cemeteries managed by the society cover more than 350 acres of green space in an urban environment. These cemeteries hold significant social, political, cultural, and military historical value for Norfolk. Four of the cemeteries—Cedar Grove, Elmwood, West Point, and Calvary—require urgent conservation due to damage from vandalism, weathering, and time. The society plays a critical role as many families responsible for the upkeep of burial plots have either passed on or moved away.
Community Engagement
Community members can support the society by becoming members, volunteering, or donating. The organization also participates in broader local historical projects and events, such as "Wreaths Across America," which highlights the importance of memorializing those buried in these historic sites.
Organizational Structure
The society operates with a board of officers and advisors, including experts in conservation and public relations. This structure helps in managing fundraising efforts and educational programs effectively.
Legal Status
The Norfolk Society for Cemetery Conservation is registered with the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 46-2385604, classified as a Mutual/Membership Benefit Organization focused on cemeteries and burial services.
