Kit Carson Rural Development

Kit Carson Rural Development (KCRD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the community of Kit Carson, Colorado. Established in 1993 with a grant from the USDA, the organization became dormant but was reinstated in 2005. KCRD focuses on affordable housing, economic development, and environmental projects such as brownfield cleanups.

Mission

The mission of KCRD is to promote, beautify, and assist in the betterment of the Kit Carson community. This includes initiatives to enhance economic stability and improve community infrastructure.

Projects

KCRD has undertaken various significant projects:

• Affordable Housing: A notable project included the development of five new, 2-story modular affordable homes in a $1.56 million project. This effort aimed to increase affordable housing options in the area.
• Community Enhancements: Early projects included installing streetlights and landscaping on Main Street, adding a town welcome sign, and organizing community clean-up days.
• Park Renovation: In 2007, KCRD secured a GOCO Grant to renovate the local park, adding amenities like a covered pavilion, restrooms, a basketball court, and lighting.
• Environmental and Aesthetic Improvements: KCRD planted trees, installed solar lamp posts along Main Street, and has engaged in large-scale tree removal projects.

Funding and Partnerships

KCRD collaborates with numerous local and national organizations, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), Boettcher Foundation, El Pomar Foundation, and others. Grants from foundations like the Cooper Clark Foundation have supported specific projects, such as affordable housing initiatives.

Structure

The organization is governed by a Board of Directors, consisting of a Chairperson, Co-Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer. All board members have significant ties to the local community.
