Congratulations to @cole.pulice on the release of Land’s End Eternal on @leavingrecords! Catch Cole at The Lab for their hometown album release show in June, with @juliussmack performing and crate digger @zullyadler of @goatytapes__houserules playing records to open the night. Cole Pulice: Land’s End Eternal + Julius Smack + Zully Adler DJ Saturday, June 7, 2025 Doors 8pm / Show 8:30pm $23 adv / $25 door / free or discounted for members Cole Pulice celebrates the release of Land’s End Eternal on Leaving Records with a trio performance of work from the album. Experimenting with guitar as a new compositional element and accompanyment to their celestial ambient jazz saxophone, Pulice’s latest record takes inspiration from the Bay Area’s long musical history and landscape. Julius Smack is the musical alias of Peter Hernandez, a Los Angeles-based musician, performer, and director of Practical Records. His work explores intuitive and imaginative landscapes, envisioning new modes of perception and existence. Drawing inspiration from vogue, postmodern dance, Japanese environmental music, and contemporary dance music, he synthesizes these influences into a singular artistic vision rooted in queer and indigenous heritage. Friends — we sent out an email a little bit ago detailing the impact that the shuttering of the NEA will have on many of the core programs at The Lab. In the roughly 2 1/2 hours since, we’ve received an outpouring of support — about $5,000, which is over 25% of our immediate gap, from many more one-time donors than usually give to The Lab in even the span of a year. Here’s the email (link in bio, as well as link to donate). We deeply appreciate your support. It truly makes all the difference. Late last Friday, the National Endowment for the Arts sent out two emails stating that The Lab’s two active grants totaling $85,000 would be terminated as of May 31, 2025. By now, you’ve probably seen this news rippling through social media as well as the in-depth coverage from KQED, but I wanted to share more about what this means for The Lab specifically. Donate Here I want to first emphasize that we were able to accelerate our planned NEA-funded programming, pay all artists involved, and that we were reimbursemed for the entirety of our contracted grant funding. This decision was made shortly after the election, in collaboration with the artists involved, after hearing horror stories from colleagues in other fields whose active grants with other agencies were in danger. I’m thankful we were able to work quickly and get the entirety of the grants into the hands of artists. The NEA has been one of the primary funders of The Lab’s commissioning program, specifically funding recent projects with Carrie Hott, Indira Allegra, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Zachary James Watkins, and Cloaca Projects with work by Peter Simensky, Alex Tatarsky, Cone Shape Top, and SutroFM. Overall, NEA funding has resulted in over $200,000 going toward commissioned projects, with about half of that going directly into the hands of artists. [more in comments] (fb)
