Home Okonomiyaki Adventure The Origins of Okonomiyaki Okonomiyaki often referred to as a savory Japanese pancake has a rich history that dates back to the Edo period 16031868. Initially emerging as a popular street food this dish reflects the culinary creativity and resourceful nature of the people during that time. The term okonomiyaki translates to grilled as you like it indicating its flexible preparation style that allows for a variety of ingredients based on personal preferences and regional availability. Tracing its roots further the earliest form of okonomiyaki is linked to a dish called funoyaki which was essentially a simple pancake made from flour and water.
