Yimby Georgia
Y!MBY Georgia is about creating and nurturing a movement for community and compassion for our home•less neighbors. You know that thing, "NIMBY"- "not in my backyard"? Well, that's not us: YIMBY - Yes In My BackYard. We seek to inspire and show others how they can make a difference in their own communities and neighborhoods - their own backyards. It's our ultimate goal to create a dynamic template for a strong and compassionate coalition of communities that treats the least among us as our neighbors. A coalition that will ultimately grow beyond Atlanta, beyond Georgia.
YIMBY Georgia
Overview
YIMBY Georgia, with the acronym standing for "Yes, In My Backyard," is a nonprofit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in February 2020 by Daniel Troppy, its mission focuses on supporting individuals experiencing homelessness through direct and hands-on methods.
Activities and Mission
The organization's efforts are centered around providing immediate support to homeless individuals. This includes distributing essential items such as meals, socks, hygiene products, first aid kits, and other necessities. YIMBY Georgia also offers educational resources to encourage proactive community engagement with homeless neighbors. The organization often partners with local businesses to amplify its impact, such as handing out hundreds of meals daily during its peak operations.
YIMBY's approach began with an artistic project, as Troppy, a photographer, befriended a homeless man and used social media to raise awareness and funds. This initial outreach led to further engagement and collaboration with artists who have experienced homelessness, creating fundraising merchandise to support the organization's activities.
Financial Status
As of 2023, YIMBY Georgia reported no revenue but incurred expenses of approximately $15,400, with no recorded assets or liabilities[5]. This financial status may reflect its grassroots origins and the challenges faced by small nonprofits in achieving financial stability.
Community Impact and Challenges
YIMBY Georgia operates amidst broader conversations about housing affordability and social services in Atlanta. While it does not directly advocate for housing policies like some other YIMBY organizations, its mission aligns with broader community needs, especially during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic, when traditional avenues of support for homeless individuals were severely disrupted.
Despite its modest size and financial constraints, YIMBY Georgia contributes to Atlanta's social fabric by providing tangible support to vulnerable populations and educating the public about proactive ways to address homelessness.
