Texas State Teachers Association
The Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA) is a nonprofit organization and the oldest education association in Texas, affiliated with the National Education Association (NEA). Established in 1880 when the North Texas Teachers Association and the Austin Teachers Association combined, TSTA has played a crucial role in shaping the landscape of public education in Texas.
Mission
TSTA's mission is to "unite, organize, and empower public education advocates to shape public education in Texas, thus providing a quality public school for every child." The organization is dedicated to promoting quality public education, advocating for educators, and supporting legislative initiatives that benefit teachers and students.
Leadership and Governance
TSTA is led by a full-time state president and vice president, supported by a board of directors and a democratically elected House of Delegates. This governance structure ensures that the organization remains responsive to the needs of its members and the broader education community.
History
Since its inception, TSTA has been instrumental in several key legislative achievements, including the establishment of minimum foundation laws that set statewide teacher salaries, the creation of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, certification laws, and bills to provide maintenance and operation funds for schools. In 1974, TSTA unified with the National Education Association (NEA) through an all-member vote, further enhancing its national influence and resources.
Achievements
TSTA has been at the forefront of numerous important reforms and advocacy efforts. It continues to work on issues such as teacher pay, school funding, and educational equity, ensuring that public education remains a cornerstone of Texas's social and economic development.
Advocacy and Policy Work
TSTA actively engages in policy-making and advocacy, often working to influence legislation that impacts public education. The organization also provides resources, support, and representation for educators, making it an important voice in the political landscape of Texas education.
Affiliations
As an affiliate of the National Education Association (NEA), TSTA benefits from national resources and networks, enhancing its ability to advocate for teachers and public education in Texas. This affiliation allows TSTA to stay informed about national trends and best practices, ensuring that its advocacy efforts are informed by a broader understanding of education policy.
Current Efforts
Today, TSTA remains committed to its mission, continuing to advocate for quality public education and the rights of educators. Through its advocacy and policy work, the organization seeks to ensure that every child in Texas has access to high-quality education, empowering them for future success.
