The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation

The corneal endothelium acts like a tiny pump, maintaining the delicate fluid balance within your cornea. In Fuchs' Dystrophy, these pump cells are damaged, causing fluid to accumulate and the cornea to swell. This swelling leads to the characteristic cloudy vision and glare experienced by those with FECD.

The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation

One of the earliest signs of Fuchs' Dystrophy is the formation of guttae – small, wart-like deposits on the back surface of the cornea. These deposits are a result of the endothelial cells malfunctioning. While guttae themselves don't directly cause vision loss, their presence indicates the progression of FECD.
