An ACLR volunteer got a call from her father and brother that a litter of kittens was stuck in an excavator motor fan their family company was renting. Warning: This story is not for the faint-hearted. But we’d like to make a HUGE shoutout to this ACLR volunteer for ultimately saving three kitten lives. Tragically, the owner of the excavator was not aware that mama cat decided to nest there with her three kittens. When he turned on the machine, completely unaware of the nesting family, mama cat did not make it. 😞 The ACLR volunteer’s father heard the kittens yelling and called her to see if she could help. She consulted some seasoned ACLR trappers to attempt to save the rest of this little family. We had all hands on deck, but her father and brother found a solution to saving everyone in the meantime! The babies were in an area of the truck no one could imagine reaching. They came up with the genius idea to craft together wire fishing nets and a back scratcher, which they used to scoop the kittens into the net and remove them from the bottom of the fan!!! These kittens were not out of the woods yet. The babies (only a few days old) were cold and not moving. It turns out, the truck owner had poured water on them hoping to scare them out of the machine—but they weren’t big enough yet. This human family held the kittens in their shirts in an attempt to warm them up, and we immediately got them some heating pads and much-needed bottles. One kittens arm and foot is injured, and other two are so little and trying their best without mama. Kittens this young, especially from tragic situations like this one, have a long journey ahead of them. Not every rescue victory is a 100% happy story, but you know this by now if you are involved in the animal welfare world. We’re just so glad that this family acted quickly and thoughtfully. Without their help, these three littles wouldn’t be with us today. (fb)
