HAWAIIAN PLANT OF THE DAY Hawaiian name: Loulu lelo Botanical name: Pritchardia hillebrandii Family: Arecaceae (Palm family) Status: Endemic Where found: Moloka‘i Water/Light: Dry, with full to partial sunlight Elevation range: Coastal Height: 20 to 50 feet, with a 4 to 7 foot spread Notes: Loulu lelo is an endemic palm native to the island of Molokaʻi. In old Hawaiʻi, loulu lelo fronds were used as protection from rain and sun, and spears were fashions from the hardwood of the trunks. The fruits, called hāwane or wāhane, were eaten by early Hawaiians and tastes similar to coconut. This native is ideal for low elevation landscapes as it tolerates drought, wind, and salt. Loulu lelo is one of many Native Hawaiian palms featured at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. (fb)

WEEKLY PLANT SALE This week's plant sale features plants you can still see on favorite hikes around Maui. Naupaka kuahiwi was common all over inland West and South Maui, and can sometimes be seen at ʻĀhihi Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve. ʻĀkia grows in nearly the same leeward zone as naupaka kuahiwi, inland both West and South. Naio is one of the most wide ranging native Hawaiian species, once occurring at nearly all elevations and moisture zones. Naio papa is a uniquely flat form of this dryland tree that is known only from Ka Lae (South Point), Hawaiʻi island. In the ad, it is pictured growing near the Keālia boardwalk on Maui. Schiedea globosa has a fragrant globe shaped flower that is excellent for lei. It grows near the ocean out at places like Pu'u Koa'e (Kahakuloa Head), named for the tropicbirds that frequented the area, and many offshore islets mostly on the East side. Naupaka kuahiwi $5 for 3.5 inch pot ʻĀkia $5 for 3.5 inch pot Naio papa $5 for 3.5 inch pot Still have Schiedea globosa from last week $5 for 4 inch pot You can submit plant requests starting then by: 📞 Calling us at (808) 249-2798 or 📩 Sending us a direct message on Instagram and Facebook or 🌱 Visiting us in person at the garden.
