Description

National AMBUCS, Inc.

National AMBUCS, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring mobility & independence in communities across the United States. Founded on May 18, 1922, by William L. White, AMBUCS has grown into a dynamic organization with over 157 chapters spanning more than 36 states.

Mission

The mission of National AMBUCS is fulfilled through a combination of core programs and community service activities. These initiatives aim to support individuals with disabilities by enhancing their mobility and independence.

Programs

Amtryke Adaptive Tricycles

The Amtryke Program provides adaptive tricycles to individuals with disabilities, promoting both physical mobility and personal independence. Originating in the early 1990s, this initiative was spearheaded by Sue Haywood, a pediatric physical therapist who recognized the transformative impact of adaptive tricycles on children's lives. The project quickly gained national support and has since provided over 40,000 Amtrykes, with chapters delivering around 3,500 each year.

Scholarships for Therapists

National AMBUCS also offers educational scholarships to students pursuing careers in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and hearing audiology. Since 1955, more than 15,500 scholarships have been awarded, totaling over $8.9 million. This program supports the development of professionals who are critical to identifying and supporting individuals benefiting from AMBUCS services.

Community Service

Chapters engage in diverse community service projects, such as constructing home access ramps and accessible playgrounds. These initiatives not only enhance community accessibility but also foster a sense of unity and purpose among members. Annually, chapters report significant hours and resources spent on such projects.

History and Expansion

AMBUCS was initially established with 50 members in Birmingham, Alabama. The organization's growth was facilitated by innovative fundraising strategies, including the sale of turpentine cups. Today, AMBUCS is supported by nearly 5,000 members who contribute to national and local initiatives.

Governance and Operations

National AMBUCS operates with a national board that guides the organization's strategic direction. The organization is also supported by a small staff team based at the AMBUCS Resource Center, which provides resources and oversight for the chapters. This structure allows for both centralized leadership and localized execution, ensuring that services are tailored to meet community needs effectively.
