Dallas Paleontological Society
The Dallas Paleontological Society is a U.S. non-profit organization dedicated to promoting interest and knowledge in the science of paleontology. Founded in 1984, the Society serves as a network for professionals and serious amateurs to exchange data and engage in educational activities related to the field of paleontology.
Mission and Activities
The Society's primary mission is to foster an environment where both professionals and amateur paleontologists can collaborate, share knowledge, and advance the study of fossil records. This is achieved through regular monthly meetings, which often feature presentations on various topics in paleontology. These meetings provide a platform for members to learn about new discoveries and research in the field.
Programs for Youth
One of the notable initiatives of the Dallas Paleontological Society is the Paleontologists In Training (PIT Crew) program. This program, designed for children aged 7 to 15, aims to educate and engage young enthusiasts in paleontology through field trips and educational events. The PIT Crew offers a unique opportunity for children to participate in hands-on learning activities and explore the world of fossils and prehistoric life.
Publications and Resources
The Society contributes to educational efforts by publishing materials and guides related to fossil collecting and paleontology. In 2017, the Society released a comprehensive guidebook on fossil collecting, targeting both beginners and experienced collectors. This guide serves as an invaluable resource for anyone interested in understanding and engaging with paleontological activities in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
Awards and Recognition
The Dallas Paleontological Society also honors significant contributions to the field through awards such as the Lloyd Hill Award. This award is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the advancement of paleontology, often through innovative research, education, or community outreach efforts.
Structure
The Society operates with a governance structure typical of non-profit organizations, though specific board members are not listed publicly. It is required to file annual reports with the IRS to maintain its non-profit status.
Overall, the Dallas Paleontological Society plays a vital role in fostering a community that values scientific exploration and education in paleontology, making it a notable organization within the U.S. scientific landscape.

Welcome to the Dallas Paleontological Society Website The Dallas Paleontological Society was founded in 1984 for the purpose of promoting interest in and knowledge of the science of paleontology. It was intended by the founding members that the Society would be a network for the exchange of data between professionals and serious amateurs in this field. Regular Monthly Meeting March 12 Dinosaurs Under Foot DPS met on Wednesday March 12thin the Lakeview Event and Conference Center Arlington Texas. Our usual meeting place at Dallas College was closed for Spring Break and this event center is near the Arlington Archosaur Site where many DPS members and friends helped excavate crocodile turtle and dinosaur fossils from the Woodbine Sandstone.
