Description

The Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the care of women with gynecologic cancers. It is the premier medical specialty society for healthcare professionals trained in comprehensive gynecologic oncology, focusing on cancers affecting the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, vagina, and vulva.

Mission and Activities

The SGO's mission is to promote the highest quality of comprehensive clinical care through education and research in the prevention and treatment of gynecologic cancers. The organization supports a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and palliative care. Its members practice in various settings, including academic institutions, hospitals, and major regional cancer centers.

SGO features a diverse membership of over 2,000 professionals, including gynecologic oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists, hematologists, surgical oncologists, obstetrician/gynecologists, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, fellows, residents, and other allied healthcare professionals. The organization provides educational resources and forums for career advancement, ensuring that its members stay current with the latest developments in gynecologic oncology.

History

The idea for the SGO originated in 1968 from discussions between Drs. Hervy E. Averette and John J. Mikuta. The society was formally established in January 1969, with George C. Lewis, Jr., MD, serving as its first chair. Since its inception, the SGO has grown into a global, inclusive community dedicated to advancing cancer care and improving patient outcomes.

Education and Research

The SGO publishes the medical journal Gynecologic Oncology, which serves as a key platform for disseminating research findings and clinical practices in the field. The organization also offers an eLearning platform, providing access to comprehensive educational resources, including films, webinars, video recordings, podcasts, and other materials focused on gynecologic oncology.

Advocacy and Awareness

The SGO is closely associated with the Foundation for Women's Cancer (FWC), which is dedicated to outreach, education, and advocacy for women's health. September is recognized as Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, during which the SGO and FWC host various events and provide resources to raise awareness and improve patient care.

International Collaboration

While primarily based in the United States, the SGO collaborates with international organizations to enhance global efforts in the treatment and research of gynecologic cancers. Its efforts align with those of similar organizations worldwide, such as the International Gynecologic Cancer Society, to provide a unified front against gynecologic cancers globally.

The SGO's commitment to advancing cancer care and advocating for patients underscores its role as a leading organization in the field of gynecologic oncology.
