Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, also known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a nonprofit organization that governs Freemasonry within the state of Texas. It is among the largest governing bodies for Freemasonry in Texas.
Early History of Freemasonry in Texas
Freemasonry in Texas underwent significant development during the early 19th century. Stephen F. Austin, often referred to as the "Father of Texas," made the first attempt to establish a Masonic lodge in Texas. On February 11, 1828, he convened a meeting at San Felipe to petition the Grand York Lodge of Mexico for a charter. However, due to political tensions and the eventual outlawing of Freemasonry by the Mexican government on October 25, 1828, this effort was unsuccessful[1][2][3].
Founding of the First Lodge
The successful establishment of Freemasonry in Texas began in March 1835 when five Master Masons, including Dr. Anson Jones, met under an oak tree near Brazoria. They decided to petition the Grand Lodge of Louisiana for a dispensation to form a lodge. The petition was granted, and a charter was issued for Holland Lodge No. 36, which initially met on December 27, 1835, in Brazoria[2][3][4].
The Grand Lodge of Texas
In 1838, the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas was formed, with Anson Jones serving as its first Grand Master. Following Texas's annexation by the United States, the Grand Lodge became known as the Grand Lodge of Texas. By 1860, Texas had 226 active lodges and approximately 9,000 members[3].
Activities and Impact
During the Civil War, the Grand Lodge issued dispensations for traveling military lodges, supporting soldiers involved in the conflict. Despite financial challenges following the war, the fraternity continued to grow, reaching a membership peak of over 134,000 in the late 1920s. Post-World War II, the membership further increased, reaching 245,000 in 1961[3].
Today, the Grand Lodge of Texas remains a prominent force in Texas, supporting various charitable initiatives and community programs. It continues to uphold the principles of Freemasonry, focusing on personal development and community service[4].
Philanthropy
Masons in Texas are involved in a wide range of philanthropic activities, including support for children's hospitals through Scottish Rite and Shrine memberships. Local lodges also engage in community programs such as educational initiatives and supporting the elderly[4].
Financial and Legal Status
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas is a nonprofit organization with EIN 740385633. It operates under federal nonprofit regulations, managing resources to support Masonic activities and charitable causes across Texas.
