Texas Association of Museums

Overview

The Texas Association of Museums (TAM) is a nonprofit organization established to promote professionalism and networking among museums in Texas. It functions as a liaison between museums and related organizations, serving as an information clearinghouse and encouraging public engagement with museums across the state.

History

The roots of TAM trace back to 1939 with the formation of the Southwestern Conference of Museums in San Antonio. However, the modern Texas Association of Museums began taking shape in the 1960s through a series of conferences. The Texas Museums Association was formally established in 1969, with the Texas Association of Museums being officially created in 1974. TAM received its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1977 after amending its purposes to focus on educational activities.

Activities and Programs

TAM serves various types of museums, including art centers, historic sites, children's museums, and science centers. It hosts annual conferences, which offer opportunities for museum professionals to network and share ideas. The organization also administers the Media Innovation & Excellence Awards (TAMMIES), recognizing museums for innovative uses of media and technology in exhibits and programs.

Annual Conference

TAM's annual conference is a significant event in the Texas museum community, providing sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities for professionals. The 2025 conference in Austin celebrates 50 years of TAM, with a theme of "Bridging the Past & Future." Keynote speakers often highlight current trends and research in the museum sector.

Mission

TAM's mission includes enhancing communication between museums and professionals, providing professional assistance, and promoting educational experiences for Texans and visitors. The organization supports a diverse range of museums, fostering collaboration and innovation across the state.
