Florida Defenders of the Environment, Inc.
In 1969, led by Marjorie Harris Carr, members of the Audubon Society and others created Florida Defenders of the Environment (FDE). Florida Defenders of the Environment was founded in 1969 to fight construction of the Cross-Florida Barge Canal. We succeeded, and have been trying ever since to repair the damage to the land and waterways caused during initial construction stages of the barge canal through public outreach to spread awareness of the benefits of restoring the Ocklawaha River.
