The San Jose Youth Symphony gives young people a foundation for life through orchestral music. We create programs that assure young musicians achieve technical proficiency, musical knowledge and an emotional connection to music. We strive to make each performance for the community uplifting, spirited and exciting.
San Jose Youth Symphony
The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS), with EIN 91-2166427, is a non-profit youth orchestra organization based in San Jose, California, United States. Founded in 1951 as part of the San Jose Symphony, SJYS became an independent entity in 2002 following the financial difficulties faced by the San Jose Symphony. This transition allowed SJYS to continue providing music education and performance opportunities to young musicians.

- Annual Auditions: The organization selects musicians from over 700 applicants each year, with participants ranging in age from eight to 21.
- Weekly Rehearsals and Summer Camps: Ensembles rehearse weekly from September through early June, with a mandatory summer camp held annually.
- Music Matters Program: Developed in response to cuts in state music education funding, this program provides after-school music classes in local schools.
- Competitions: SJYS hosts the Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition, the Chamber Orchestra's Concerto Competition, the Concert Orchestra's Solo Competition, and the Avance Flute Choir’s Solo Competition, offering members opportunities to perform with their ensembles.
