San Jose Youth Symphony

The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS), with EIN 91-2166427, is a non-profit youth orchestra organization based in San Jose, California, United States. Founded in 1951 as part of the San Jose Symphony, SJYS became an independent entity in 2002 following the financial difficulties faced by the San Jose Symphony. This transition allowed SJYS to continue providing music education and performance opportunities to young musicians.

  • Weekly Rehearsals and Summer Camps: Ensembles rehearse weekly from September through early June, with a mandatory summer camp held annually.
  • Music Matters Program: Developed in response to cuts in state music education funding, this program provides after-school music classes in local schools.
  • Competitions: SJYS hosts the Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition, the Chamber Orchestra's Concerto Competition, the Concert Orchestra's Solo Competition, and the Avance Flute Choir’s Solo Competition, offering members opportunities to perform with their ensembles.

SJYS is recognized for its community engagement, including benefit concerts and collaborations with other musical groups. It has received accolades such as the Ambassador's Award for Cultural Diplomacy and commendations from local and state leaders. The organization's performances often support welfare causes, and it frequently offers free concerts to community groups.
