The San Jose Youth Symphony gives young people a foundation for life through orchestral music. We create programs that assure young musicians achieve technical proficiency, musical knowledge and an emotional connection to music. We strive to make each performance for the community uplifting, spirited and exciting.

San Jose Youth Symphony

The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS), with EIN 91-2166427, is a non-profit youth orchestra organization based in San Jose, California, United States. Founded in 1951 as part of the San Jose Symphony, SJYS became an independent entity in 2002 following the financial difficulties faced by the San Jose Symphony. This transition allowed SJYS to continue providing music education and performance opportunities to young musicians.

Overview

SJYS is dedicated to fostering the musical talents of youth, offering a broad range of programs designed to enhance technical proficiency, musical knowledge, and emotional connection with music. The organization comprises several ensembles:

  • Philharmonic Orchestra: Conducted by Yair Samet, this ensemble is the premier orchestra of SJYS, composed of about 100 musicians, predominantly of high school age.
  • Concert Orchestra: Led by Scott Homer.
  • Chamber Orchestra: Also conducted by Yair Samet.
  • Prelude String Ensemble: Led by Christina Wong.
  • Intermezzo String Ensemble: Led by Virginia Smedberg.
  • Avant and Avance Flute Choirs: Led by Sarah Benton.
  • Concert Wind Ensemble: Led by Charles Ancheta.
  • Percussion Ensemble: Led by Shota Otaguro.
  • Jazz Ensemble: Led by Ricky Martinez.
  • Harp Ensemble: Led by Kristal Schwartz.
Programs and Activities

SJYS offers a variety of programs and activities to support young musicians:

  • Annual Auditions: The organization selects musicians from over 700 applicants each year, with participants ranging in age from eight to 21.
  • Weekly Rehearsals and Summer Camps: Ensembles rehearse weekly from September through early June, with a mandatory summer camp held annually.
  • Music Matters Program: Developed in response to cuts in state music education funding, this program provides after-school music classes in local schools.
  • Competitions: SJYS hosts the Philharmonic Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition, the Chamber Orchestra's Concerto Competition, the Concert Orchestra's Solo Competition, and the Avance Flute Choir’s Solo Competition, offering members opportunities to perform with their ensembles.
Community Impact

SJYS is recognized for its community engagement, including benefit concerts and collaborations with other musical groups. It has received accolades such as the Ambassador's Award for Cultural Diplomacy and commendations from local and state leaders. The organization's performances often support welfare causes, and it frequently offers free concerts to community groups.

Financial Support

As a non-profit organization, SJYS is supported by various foundations and corporations. It relies on donations and sponsorships to maintain its programs and provide scholarships for its members.

Mission and Values

The mission of SJYS is to give young people a foundation for life through orchestral music. It aims to create programs that ensure young musicians achieve technical proficiency, musical knowledge, and an emotional connection to music. The organization strives to make each performance uplifting and exciting for the community.
