American Guild of Organists

The American Guild of Organists (AGO) is a nonprofit professional association dedicated to serving the organ and choral music fields. Founded on January 1, 1896, the AGO is headquartered in New York City and operates as a 501(c)(3) organization. Its mission is to foster a thriving community of musicians who share their knowledge and inspire passion for the organ.

The AGO aims to advance the cause of organ and choral music, increase their contributions to aesthetic and religious experiences, and promote their understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment. The AGO evaluates attainments in organ playing, choral techniques, conducting, theory, and general knowledge of music, granting certificates such as the Service Playing Certificate, Colleague, Choir Master, Associateship, and Fellowship, with Fellowship being the highest level of certification.

Membership in the AGO is open to anyone interested in organ and choral music, regardless of denominational affiliation or musical ability. The organization has approximately 14,700 members in over 300 chapters across the United States and internationally, including countries like Australia, Barbados, Hong Kong, Kenya, Finland, Singapore, Shanghai, and Taiwan.

Leadership and Governance

The AGO is governed by a National Council that includes national officers and regional councillors. The national officers consist of a president, vice president/councillor for competitions and new music, secretary/councillor for communications, and treasurer/councillor for finance and development.

Publications and Events

The AGO publishes a prominent monthly magazine, The American Organist, which is the most widely read journal devoted to organ and choral music. The organization hosts national conventions in even-numbered years and regional conventions in odd-numbered years, showcasing the finest performers in organ and choral music.

Recognition

In 2013, the American Guild of Organists was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in recognition of its contributions to classical music.
