International Women in Jazz Inc.

Overview International Women in Jazz Inc. (IWJ) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting women jazz artists and related professionals. It aims to foster a greater awareness of the diverse contributions women make to jazz worldwide.

Mission IWJ's mission is to ensure women remain a vital part of the past, present, and future of jazz. Through its programs, IWJ provides information and assistance to its members, promoting their careers and advocating for their rights within the industry.

History IWJ grew out of a seminar on women in jazz organized by Pastor Dale Lind, held at Saint Peter’s Church in New York City in September 1995. The seminar featured prominent figures like Cobi Narita, Leslie Gourse, and Lorraine Gordon. Recognizing the need for an ongoing forum, Narita founded IWJ the following November. The organization operates worldwide, with its headquarters in New York City.

Activities IWJ hosts various events, including the monthly "First Mondays" jam sessions and workshops. These events provide networking opportunities and platforms for women artists to showcase their talents. IWJ also participates in larger jazz festivals, promoting diversity and inclusivity within the jazz community.

Affiliations IWJ has affiliations with other organizations, such as Donne in Música, an international women in music foundation. This partnership offers IWJ members opportunities to perform in festivals and have their works reviewed for potential performances internationally.

Leadership The organization is currently led by President Jacqueline Lennon. Cobi Narita served as President Emeritus until her passing.

Membership and Support Membership includes a diverse range of jazz professionals and enthusiasts. The organization relies on donations and support from the public to continue its mission. Contributions are tax-deductible, and IWJ encourages donations to support specific areas of its activities.

Impact IWJ plays a crucial role in advocating for women's rights and opportunities in the jazz industry. It works to address issues such as unequal pay and limited opportunities for women in a male-dominated field. By promoting awareness and providing support, IWJ contributes significantly to the development and recognition of women in jazz.
