Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center
The Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center (HHREC) is a nonprofit organization based in White Plains, New York, dedicated to enhancing the teaching of the Holocaust and promoting human rights education. Founded in 1990, HHREC serves schools, synagogues, colleges, churches, and civic centers throughout Westchester County and the greater Hudson Valley area. Its mission is to encourage students and educators to confront bigotry and prejudice by learning from the lessons of the Holocaust and human rights abuses.
History
HHREC was originally known as the Westchester Holocaust Education Center and later the Westchester Holocaust Commission. Its establishment aimed to memorialize the victims of the Holocaust and honor survivors, rescuers, and liberators. A significant milestone was the creation of the Garden of Remembrance in 1992, a memorial space that features inscriptions and sculptures commemorating those who suffered during the Holocaust.
In 1994, following the enactment of New York State legislation requiring the inclusion of the Holocaust, slavery, and other human rights issues in school curricula, HHREC expanded its mission. It took the initiative to develop educational programs for teachers, equipping them to deliver sensitive and informed instruction on these topics.
Educational Programs
HHREC offers a range of programs and resources aimed at teachers and students, reaching over 3,000 educators and hundreds of thousands of students since its inception. These initiatives include professional development workshops, curriculum design support, and a speakers bureau comprised of Holocaust survivors and liberators who share their personal stories.
The organization emphasizes not only the historical significance of the Holocaust but also its contemporary relevance, addressing issues such as hatred, bigotry, and indifference. By fostering an environment of learning and reflection, HHREC aims to equip students with the tools to become active citizens who promote dignity and respect for all individuals.
Community Engagement
In addition to educational resources, HHREC organizes community events that foster dialogue and understanding around human rights issues. These events include film festivals, lecture series, and workshops designed to engage various audiences in discussions regarding the implications of hate and the importance of tolerance.
Through its ongoing efforts, HHREC strives to inspire the next generation to model positive behavior and take action against injustice in their communities, reinforcing its commitment to advocating for human rights for all.
