Alongside Network

Alongside Network is a community of support for families of children who have experienced a life-threatening illness or injury. We do this through connection, community, and expertise. Alongside Network is working to shift the system of care for families who have a child with a life-threatening illness or injury, such that care for mental health is integrated throughout their hospital and recovery experience. Using our Whole Child, Whole Family framework, we work with hospital systems to raise awareness and determine a trajectory of care. We also work directly with families to validate, connect, and support them as they adjust to life following a child's life-threatening illness or injury.

Alongside Network

Alongside Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The organization primarily focuses on supporting families whose children have experienced life-threatening illnesses or injuries by integrating mental health care into their hospital and recovery processes.

Mission

Alongside Network's mission is centered around transforming the healthcare system to better serve families affected by life-threatening pediatric illnesses or injuries. They employ a holistic approach known as the Whole Child, Whole Family framework to collaborate with hospital systems and provide support directly to families. This framework aims to integrate mental health care throughout the healthcare journey, ensuring that families receive both validation and connection as they navigate the challenges associated with their child's condition[1][5].

Programs and Activities

One of the key initiatives of Alongside Network is the establishment of Wellbeing Groups. These groups, which are free for families, are facilitated by clinical social workers and parents with lived experience. They are conducted virtually via Zoom and focus on validating experiences, building community among parents, and enhancing coping skills[4]. Alongside Network also works with hospital systems to demonstrate the benefits of integrated care and advocates for post-discharge mental health supports to become a standard part of the recovery process[2].

Governance and Financials

The organization is governed by a board of directors. Notably, Jen Aspengren serves as the Board Chair of Alongside Network[1]. Financially, Alongside Network receives its revenue primarily from contributions, with no executive compensation paid to key employees or officers[3]. In 2023, the organization reported a revenue of $271,437, with total assets of $164,765 and liabilities of $1,813[3]. Professional fundraising fees are minimal, totaling $1,800 in recent years, while other salaries and wages account for a significant portion of expenses[1][3].

Impact and Legacy

Alongside Network was founded by parents who have personally experienced the challenges of caring for a child with a life-threatening condition. Their mission is driven by the understanding that healing extends beyond medical recovery, emphasizing the need for continuous support in the face of complex life changes[2][5]. By addressing the psychosocial needs of families through collaborative efforts with healthcare providers, Alongside Network seeks to create a more compassionate and sustainable healthcare system for families navigating pediatric crises.
