Mission and Goals

The mission of the Redwood Coast Humane Society is to advocate for the welfare, rights, respect, and protection of all animals through care, intervention, and education. The organization focuses on several key goals:

  • Temporary Care and Adoption: Providing foster and medical care for animals that are surrendered, abandoned, injured, or rescued, with the aim of locating permanent homes for them through adoption programs.
  • Population Control: Offering financial assistance and education to control dog and cat populations through spay/neuter services.
  • Community Resources: Acting as an information resource for various animal-related issues, including lost and found pets, feral cat management, referrals, and counseling.
  • Education and Outreach: Educating the public about animal-related issues through workshops and events.
  • Volunteer Network: Developing and sustaining a skilled volunteer network to support the organization's activities.
  • Fundraising: Engaging in fundraising activities to support its mission and goals.

History

The Redwood Coast Humane Society originated from the Mendocino Coast Humane Society, which was established in 1987 by concerned residents addressing feral cat overpopulation and the treatment of unwanted dogs and cats. In 2000, a separate nonprofit organization was formed by residents in Gualala and The Sea Ranch, leading to the establishment of the Redwood Coast Humane Society. The founding members included Jackie Gardener, Mary Moore, Lisa Scott, Carol McQuarrie, and Dagmar Moseley.

Operations

The organization operates a shelter where animals are cared for until they are adopted. It also collaborates with a network of local shelter partners to find homes for cats and dogs.

Tax Status

The Redwood Coast Humane Society is a tax-exempt organization with the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 68-0451469.
